Paradise Island
Paradise Island, Bahamas
Single-Family Residence
Completed
Size: 2,970 sq ft
Accessible only by boat, Hog Island Estates is a refined example of climate-conscious vernacular architecture, marrying traditional Bahamian design elements with resilient construction strategies tailored for its remote, hurricane-prone setting.
Raised on robust, reinforced concrete plinths, the residence sits elevated above the island’s vulnerable floodplain, allowing storm surge to pass beneath the structure—a pragmatic and elegant response to the realities of building in the Caribbean. Above this beltline, the two-storey home is entirely timber-framed, echoing the architectural language of the region through its pitched roof, deep overhangs, and a continuous wraparound balcony that provides shading and spatial permeability.
Clad in durable cement plank siding, the building is designed for longevity in the corrosive marine environment. Operable shutters offer both a traditional aesthetic and critical protection from high winds and flying debris during tropical storms. The envelope—fully insulated in both roof and wall assemblies—ensures thermal comfort year-round, with passive cooling strategies supported by the elevated design and deep verandahs that promote cross-ventilation.
Hog Island Estates stands as a contemporary homage to island craftsmanship, designed not only to withstand its environment but to embrace and enhance it—quietly resilient, effortlessly contextual.
